I used to spend 11 months a year dreaming of the one month I'd get to spend in my cabin on the coast of Maine. Last summer, I decided that rather than miss Maine all year long, I'd move here full time and get to experience it in all seasons. And yes, I'd heard for years about Maine winters. But I'm finding my first one gloriously beautiful if sometimes a little bit cold.

This is a newsletter about a state so many of us love, even if we've moved away or only get to visit occasionally. I hope to fill it with stories and photos that will serve you well when you're here, whet your appetite for your next trip and keep you up to date on what will be waiting for you when you arrive. I like to think that, as a celebration of Maine, it will also interest those of you who live here and love it here and wouldn't think of living anywhere else.

Please feel free to send me suggestions for future editions. Tell me what you'd especially like to know about. Tell me what you love most when you're in Maine and what you miss most when you're not. I'd really like to include some of your stories and photos in future newsletters.

I hope you enjoy this first one. Thank you so much for signing up to get it.
Nita Lelyveld, City Editor

As we dream of summer, I thought you might enjoy seeing these young women heading to Camp Hitinowa in Litchfield in 1960, to learn skills such as outdoor cooking and fire building. See more historical photos of summer camp in Maine.
